Facebook Marketplace / Zelle or Venmo Scam

Buyer or seller pressures off-platform payment or fake confirmations

Immediate Answer

This is likely a scam if: someone insists on Zelle/Venmo, sends “proof” you were paid, or asks you to refund an overpayment.

How This Scam Works

Scammers use Marketplace to target sellers and buyers. Common patterns include fake payment emails, “overpayment” requests, and requests to move the conversation off-platform.

They may send screenshots or emails that look like payment confirmations, but no money has actually arrived.

Signs This Is a Scam

  • They refuse safe payment methods or local pickup.
  • They ask for your email to send “payment confirmation.”
  • You receive a message saying you must “upgrade” your account to get paid.
  • They ask you to send money back after “overpaying.”

What To Do Right Now

  1. Check your bank/app directly. Don’t trust screenshots or emails.
  2. Do not refund money you don’t actually have.
  3. Keep communication on the platform and prefer in-person exchange in a safe public place.
  4. If pressured, stop engaging and report/block.

If You Already Sent Money or Information

If you sent money, contact the payment provider and your bank immediately. Timing matters.

If you shared login codes, MFA codes, or account access, change passwords and enable MFA right away.

How To Protect Yourself Going Forward

  • Use cash or platform-supported payments when possible.
  • Never share verification codes.
  • Be wary of urgent buyers, moving companies, or “shipping agents.”

You Are Not Alone

Marketplace scams work because they feel routine. Checking inside your real account is the fastest way to cut through the noise.
